The studio

Dentistry as it should be.

A quiet practice on Cavendish Street, Claremont. Four people doing one thing well.

Interior of Lumen Dental Studio — oak floors, linen curtains, warm morning light

We opened Lumen because we believed dental care did not have to feel the way it does.

Most people approach a dental appointment with some degree of reluctance. We understand that. We also believe it is not inevitable.

What creates anxiety in a dental environment is usually not the treatment itself — it is the absence of control, the feeling of being moved through a system rather than cared for as a person. At Lumen, we have tried to design around that from the beginning.

The studio is in Claremont. It is warm, unhurried, and deliberately small. We see a limited number of patients by design. Not as a luxury positioning — as a clinical decision. The people who see us deserve our full attention, and full attention requires space.

Lumen was founded by Dr. Leilani Abara in 2015. The name is the Latin word for light — for aperture, for opening, for the space inside something. It is the right word.

The people

Who you will meet.

Dr. Leilani Abara

Dr. Leilani Abara

Principal Dentist

Trained in Cape Town and Edinburgh, Leilani has been in practice for eleven years. Her particular interest is full-mouth restoration — working with patients over time to bring things back to a state of balance. She founded Lumen because she believed dental care could be conducted entirely without urgency.

Dr. James Pringle

Dr. James Pringle

Associate Dentist

James graduated from Stellenbosch with distinction and spent two years in a specialist practice in London before returning to Cape Town. His approach is methodical and unhurried. He manages our Invisalign cases and complex restorations, and is known for explaining things once, clearly, and then waiting for you to think.

Anika Nell

Anika Nell

Lead Dental Hygienist

Anika has spent seven years building relationships with patients who genuinely look forward to their hygiene visits. That is not an accident. She is attentive, warm, and disarmingly good at finding the one thing no one else has noticed.

Tariq Visser

Tariq Visser

Practice Manager

Tariq is the reason everything at Lumen runs quietly and well. He manages appointments, coordinates care between clinicians, and is the first voice most patients hear. He has been with us from the beginning.

What we believe.

Honesty before treatment.

We will tell you what we find, including when the answer is that nothing needs to be done. We are not remunerated by the volume of treatment we carry out.

Transparency on cost.

Every treatment plan comes with a written quote. We do not proceed without your informed consent. We are happy to discuss alternatives.

No unnecessary treatment.

We will only recommend something if we genuinely believe it will improve your health or quality of life. We watch things that can be watched.

A calm environment, always.

The music, the light, the pace of conversation — none of this is accidental. It exists because we believe environment shapes experience.
